Details for: Lengai, Ol Doinyo
A herd of wildebeasts grazes in the foreground, oblivious to an explosive eruption from Tanzania's Ol Doinyo volcano in 1966. Explosive activity began in August 1966, near the end of an eruption beginning in 1960 that consisted of quiet emission of lava flows in the summit crater. Ash deposits from previous eruptions whiten the volcano's slopes like snow. The symmetrical Ol Doinyo Lengai stratovolcano is the only volcano known to have erupted carbonatite tephras and lavas in historical time. Description: Ol Doinyo Lengai (2962m), "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language,is an active volcano located in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron within the Arusha Region of Tanzania, Africa. Oldoinyo Lengai Volcano is the only volcano to erupt sodium carbonatite lavas in historical times. These lavas have a significantly lower melting point (around 500'C) than “normal” silicate lavas (around 1200'C) and their weak incandescence can only be observed at night.
